Finding a trendy niche for your side hustle is important because it sets the tone for your target audience. You can think of it as choosing a stock company to invest. While many people focus on making money from the big and ‘steady’ niches, the big money tends to come from taking risks on lesser known niches – just like growth stocks in market.
Examples of Niches That Exploded
Upcoming trendy niche are topics that is currently not super competitive but is heading towards world domination.
So an example of this might be “Staycation”. Not so long ago, this was not a common practice people are aware of.
Even my friends thought the term was coined during the Covid-19 pandemic but staycation has always been around.
Look at that spike!
If you created a blog on finding the best places for staycation in 2010, you might get decent traffic. It might not be enough for you to quit your job but it was definitely on an upward trend. In 2019, we see a massive jump because of the pandemic, locking everyone in the country.
When you can’t travel overseas, what do you do? That’s right – you go on staycations.
You might think it’s “just a Covid thing” and people won’t care about it in a few year. I don’t think so. Look at the years 2010 to 2019. There’s a steady upward trend during that period.
And as I’ve mentioned, a few of my friends didn’t even know about the term “staycation” until the pandemic. Now that they’re aware of it, they’ll look into it more even after the pandemic.
This is different from the “mask” keyword. As you can see below, the trend for “mask” is constant throughout the years. It has a huge spike in 2019 but as soon as it rises, it drops.
Reaping Rewards
Let’s go back to our staycation niche. Websites that took a risk by focusing on staycation are now reaping the rewards big time. Their popularity will continue to rise as consumer behaviour keeps changing in their favour.
If you are still not convinced, think about other niches that were not as big in the past.

- NFTs
What Niches are Sure Fire to Scale?
Unless you’re a psychic, it’s impossible to know for certain. But I wouldn’t sleep on mixed reality, space travels, blockchain and no-codes. I personally see a huge market growth for them in the next 10 years.
Of course you can never be 100% sure that a niche will take off. The best way to ride the wave is to constantly be learning.
If it’s in an area you love, learning about it won’t be a chore. Start a blog about your learnings. That’s another great way to start. In fact, that’s what Pedro Hernandes, Gumroad’s community manager, says as well.
You don’t have to bet on which niche will take off. Just see what new ideas you like to explore and build around it!
